Above are some helpful graphics to guide you (and me) with the common measurements in the kitchen.
However, I do recommend buying a kitchen scale that can alternate between grams, ounces, milliliters and fluid ounces as it will make converting readings fantastically fast and easy.

TERMINOLOGY:

Plain flour = All-purpose flour
Whole meal flour = whole wheat flour
White sugar = granulated sugar
Castor sugar =  superfine sugar
